How to rename a Chrome profile and change its picture on Mac
Short answer: open a window in the profile, click the profile picture at the
top right, then the pencil icon (or go to chrome://settings/manageProfile). There you
can change the profile's name, its colour and its picture. Give every profile a different name —
duplicate names are hard to tell apart in window titles, menus and the Dock.

Change the name, colour and picture
- Open a Chrome window in the profile you want to change.
- Click the profile picture at the top right of the window.
- Click the pencil icon to customise the profile. You can also paste
chrome://settings/manageProfileinto the address bar. - Type a new name, choose a theme colour, and pick an avatar. If the profile is signed in to a Google account, its account photo can be used instead.
Changes apply straight away; there is nothing to save.
Why every profile needs a unique name
When you have more than one profile, Chrome adds the profile's name to the end of each window's title — "Inbox – Gmail – Work". That name is the only visible way to tell which profile a window belongs to.
If two profiles share a name, their windows look identical. It is easy to type into the wrong account, and tools that sort windows by profile cannot tell them apart either. This is more common than it sounds: signing in to two accounts from the same organisation often gives both profiles the organisation's name.
A short, distinct name for each — "Work", "Client A", "Personal" — avoids all of it.
Where the new name and picture show up
- The profile button and profile menu in Chrome.
- The end of every window title for that profile.
- Chrome's Profiles menu in the menu bar.
- If you use Okie Dockie, the profile's Dock icon: it carries the profile's picture. After renaming or changing the picture, open Set up Chrome profile icons from its menu bar icon and save your selection again to refresh the icon.
Get every Chrome profile into your Dock
Okie Dockie builds a real Dock icon for each Chrome profile you use, badged with that profile's own picture. Click one and you land back in the window it already had open.
Everything except Chrome profile icons is free forever, and the profile icons come with a 7-day free trial that starts on its own — no sign-up, no card. macOS 13+, Apple Silicon and Intel.

Chrome allows it, but their windows then look identical, which makes it easy to use the wrong account. Unique names are strongly recommended.
