Where Chrome keeps profile folders on a Mac
Short answer: Chrome keeps every profile in
~/Library/Application Support/Google/Chrome/. The first profile is the
Default folder; the others are Profile 1, Profile 2 and so
on. The names you see in Chrome are stored separately, in the Local State file in the
same place.
Getting to the folder
The Library folder is hidden in Finder by default. The quickest way in: in Finder, choose Go → Go to Folder (Shift-Command-G) and paste
~/Library/Application Support/Google/Chrome/
Chrome Beta and Canary use their own folders, Chrome Beta and
Chrome Canary, next to it.
Which folder is which profile
Folder names are fixed when a profile is created and never change when you rename the profile,
so Profile 4 might be "Work" and Profile 1 might be long gone. Two ways
to match them:
- Open
chrome://versionin a window of the profile; Profile Path ends with its folder. - The
Local Statefile lists every profile's folder alongside its display name and account.
What is safe to do there
- Copying a profile folder while Chrome is quit is a reasonable personal backup.
- Deleting a profile should be done inside Chrome (profile menu → manage profiles), not by deleting the folder. Removing the folder by hand leaves Chrome's list out of step.
- Editing files inside a profile folder is not something to do casually; Chrome rewrites many of them while it runs.
Tools that work with profiles read this location too. Okie Dockie, for example, reads the profile list and pictures from here to build a Dock icon for each profile — it only reads, and never changes anything in Chrome's folder.
Get every Chrome profile into your Dock
Okie Dockie builds a real Dock icon for each Chrome profile you use, badged with that profile's own picture. Click one and you land back in the window it already had open.
Everything except Chrome profile icons is free forever, and the profile icons come with a 7-day free trial that starts on its own — no sign-up, no card. macOS 13+, Apple Silicon and Intel.
Frequently asked questions
Where are Chrome profiles stored on a Mac?
In ~/Library/Application Support/Google/Chrome/. The first profile is the Default folder and the rest are Profile 1, Profile 2 and so on.
How do I know which Chrome profile folder is which?
Open chrome://version in a window of that profile and read the end of the Profile Path line, or look up the folder in the Local State file.
Is it safe to delete a Chrome profile folder?
Delete profiles from inside Chrome instead. Removing the folder directly can leave Chrome's profile list inconsistent.
